Small Labradouro Logo

Labradouro is a brand created by Gerry Price, landlord, wine merchant, game shot and Labrador owner. Having a passion for all things to do with gundog training and the Douro region of Portugal, it was only a matter of time before the marriage of ideas produced something tangible. This autumn he is making available a small selection of gifts based on two products, a red and white wine made in the Douro valley.

The Douro valley is a beautiful area in the north of Portugal that has been associated commercially and militarily with the English for centuries. The wine producing area was regulated by the Marquis de Pombal in 1756. The development of the wine into a fortified drink and then its modern development back to high quality unfortified wine, as well as port, is a fascinating story.

Portugal has 77 unique grape varieties. In the Douro many varieties were grown together in what was known as a field blend so that whatever the season, some sort of crop was guaranteed. More recently individual varieties have been planted in blocks for separate production and vinification before eventual blending.

Spanish Vineyard

The wines have been developed as a partnership with Lavradores de Feitoria, a community of top growers from across the Douro Valley, set up in 1999. People are a key factor in the whole venture, with all the shareholders directly and wholeheartedly involved in making what is today a flagship of Douro wines.

Available as a pair (£35.00) or as a six pack (£85.00) of red, white or mixed and presented in a branded hessian gift bag. The packs can be dispatched to anywhere in the UK and will be sent with a postcard of the label of your choice and greeting you choose.

Wine Tasting notess (by Tamlyn Curran)

16.5 / 20 Drink 2013-2014 | Viosinho, Codega and Malvasia Fina.

Pale gold. A bright fresh scent that is almost floral - the sweet citrus fragrance of pomelo, with a tiny hint of apple. Initially quite soft and full in the mouth with a pithy grapefruit-peel bitterness to frame it. Green apples and Asian pear and delicate white orchard peaches, finishing in a fan of lively acidity. Labradouro Tinto, 2010 Douro

The red wine is made from typical Douro valley varieties including Touriga Nacional and Tinto Roriz and has not undergone any oak ageing. It is from the 2010 vintage.

Wine Tasting Notes (by Tamlyn Curran)

16.5 / 20 Drink 2013-2015 | Mostly Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional, with the rest made up by a field blend.

Deep aubergine with a crimson rim. Ripe dark fruit practically leaps out the glass, sweet scented and generous. Equally plump and glossy in the mouth, a wonderful mesh of plum, black cherry and mulberry fruit with savoury meaty note and a fine streak of dark minerality. Supple structure, bouncy tannins, and good persistence. So very fresh that the finish is quite mouthwatering - a red wine for even a hot day. Beautifully balanced. Packed to the brim with delicious pleasure. (TC)
